COURSE DETAILS

About this course

Successful completion of this course will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to be able to develop an asthma management plan and provide asthma-related first aid interventions in the workplace.

The course covers the correct use of reliever medication, recognition, risk management, prevention, and risk minimisation strategies related to asthma. Individuals completing this course will be able to apply their skills and knowledge in either the workplace or in the community.

There are specific industries that require additional training such as childcare workers, school teachers, and other related industries.

Award issued

On successful completion students will be awarded the following unit of competency:

  • 22556VIC Course in the management of asthma risks and emergencies in the workplace

It is recommended that renewal for this course is undertaken every 3 years.

Course format

20-minute face-to-face practical assessment session in a classroom environment with the addition of online self-paced learning.

This delivery mode allows you to complete all learning components of the course online via self-paced learning and must be completed prior to attending the face-to-face practical session. You will need access to a reliable computer, tablet, or phone with internet access in order to complete the e-learning modules.

During the face-to-face practical assessment session, you will be assessed in the required skills of the course. There is a small amount of time allocated to clarify information, however, overall you should arrive prepared to perform the skills.

This course requires Online Mandatory Learning to be completed before the face-to-face practical session. If the Online Mandatory Learning is not completed prior to the practical session date, students will not be permitted to attend will not receive certification.

Students must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet, or other electronic devices with access to the internet to complete the online/ pre-course learning.

Students must have the physical fitness to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration such as assisting a casualty into the correct position and administering asthma medication.

Parental/guardian consent is required for students under the age of 18 years.

  • Asthma triggers
  • Signs and symptoms of an asthma flare-up
  • Current asthma medications
  • Management of an asthma flare-up
  • Management and communications
Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

Performance tasks and Practical scenarios:

Assessments conducted during face-to-face training session(s) include:

Practical demonstrations:

    • Simulated Scenario – Breathing difficulties (Asthma)
    • Performance Task – Administer asthma medication without a spacer

Documentation – The student must complete the following to the appropriate standard:

      • Asthma Incident Report Form
      • Asthma Risk Assessment Form
      • Individual Management Plan

Theory assessment – A knowledge assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.

Course fees for individual public bookings are dependent on venue location and will be shown in the booking calendar. Payment is required upfront.

For onsite group bookings, fees and payment terms are based on agreement between the client and CPR for Life.
