Asthma and Anaphylaxis

Complete this course online in your own time, followed by a short 1 hour face-to-face practical session.

This course has been designed for individuals who are required to provide first aid to a person experiencing asthma and/or anaphylaxis until the arrival of medical assistance. This means being able to identify the triggers, signs, and symptoms and follow the standard first aid procedures to administer medication according to condition.

Satisfactorily completing all requirements of this course provides the student with the ability to develop risk management and risk minimisation strategies for individuals diagnosed at risk of asthma and/or anaphylaxis in the workplace. This includes the development and implementation of pre-emergency risk assessment/management and the development and implementation of individual management plans.

This course provides nationally recognised training for workers, or nominated workplace first aiders, from any industry sector and addresses the provision of care to adults and/or children in the workplace who are diagnosed as being at risk or displaying signs/symptoms.

There are specific industries that require additional training such as childcare workers, school teachers, and other related industries.

1 hour face-to-face practical session. Requires completion of online learning prior to session.

Location

Melbourne, Ringwood and Cheltenham. This course is available onsite in the workplace.

This delivery mode allows you to complete all learning components of the course online via self-paced learning and must be completed prior to attending the face-to-face practical session. You will need access to a reliable computer, tablet, or phone with internet access in order to complete the e-learning modules.

During the face-to-face practical assessment session, you will be assessed in the required skills of the course. There is a small amount of time allocated to clarify information, however, overall you should arrive prepared to perform the skills.

This is an assessment ONLY course and no in-class training is provided. This delivery mode is most suited for those who have previously undertaken the same course, or a very similar course and are comfortable with online learning.

On successful completion students will be awarded the following unit of competency:

  • Course Set – 22556VIC (Asthma) & 22578VIC (Anaphylaxis)
  • 22556VIC – Course in the Management of Asthma Risks and Emergencies in the Workplace
  • 22578VIC – Course in First Aid Management of Anaphylaxis

It is recommended that renewal for this course is undertaken every 36 months.

This course requires Online Mandatory Learning to be completed before the face-to-face practical session. If the Online Mandatory Learning is not completed prior to the practical session date, students will not be permitted to attend will not receive certification.

Students must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet, or other electronic devices with access to the internet to complete the online/ pre-course learning.

As a minimum, entrants to the course must have literacy and numeracy competencies equivalent to the Australian Core Skills Framework Level 3. An example of an ACSF Level 3 competency is being able to read and comprehend the ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis, use and respond to communication techniques to request appropriate emergency assistance at the scene of a First Aid incident and use writing skills to complete incident reports.

Students must have the physical fitness to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration such as assisting a casualty into the correct position and administering asthma medication.

Assessment

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

Practical demonstrations:

  • Administer asthma medication (with a spacer)
  • Administer asthma medication (without a spacer)
  • Administer an adrenaline autoinjector for anaphylaxis
  • Provide first aid for an allergic reaction and anaphylaxis

Documentation:

  • Complete a First aid/Incident report form
  • Complete a Risk Assessment
  • Complete an Individual Management Plan, which includes a Communication Plan

 Theory assessment:

  • A written exam consisting of multiple choice and short answer questions. 

Course fees for individual public bookings are dependent on venue location and will be shown in the booking calendar. Payment is required upfront.

For onsite group bookings, fees and payment terms are based on agreement between the client and CPR for Life.
